Projected change in 5-year mean precipitation (mm/day) relative to 1971-90 as simulated by CGCM2 in the GHG+A IS92a transient runs

GIF Animation GIF Animation

These animations show the change (relative to the average of 1971-1990) in the 5-year running mean precipitation simulated in the 3-member ensemble of the GHG+A IS92a transient climate change simulations with CGCM2. The details of the forcing can be found in the CGCM forcing section.

Note that the changes in precipitation are much "noisier" than those in surface air temperature. The rapidly varying jumpy features of the animation are caused by natural variations (year-to-year changes in weather patterns) that are simulated by the climate model. Natural variation is also the cause of the differences between the three simulations. These variations which are also part of the observed climate system, make it difficult to project possible future climate change in detail.

Data from these and other simulations are available for downloading from our data section.
